Conception X, launched in University College London Faculty of Engineering, is a programme designed to train PhD students in technology entrepreneurship and to support them in building ventures based on their original research.

Now a not-for-profit institution, it accepts students from other institutions at no cost and takes no equity in startups created.

The programme offers an innovation assembly line of resources (training, mentorship, coaching) that runs in tandem with the degree, and:

  • is designed to fit the intensive research schedules of PhD students,
  • runs over 9 months, from February to October
  • is non-residential, and
  • requires only circa 15 days of attendance over the entire cohort length.

Over the past 18 months, over 50 student teams have benefited from the programme, including working with clients like HSBC and Unilever. In 2019, 5 teams raised an average of £750k each in funds. Conception X is building a strong community of academics, investors, industry leaders, and mentors to support students.

Cohort III applications are now open until the 17th of January 2020, and we would like to invite students to join. Cohort III commences on February 24, 2020.

Students can join one of the two free open evening sessions on the 27th November 2019 and 14th of January 2020 to ask questions about the programme.
